Chlordiazepoxide, or Librium, is the only therapy I've experienced that allows me to safely cease drinking alcohol the same day I began taking the medicine. In the past, I have suffered from severe alcohol dependance. We are talking a habit of at least 1 litre per day, often more, of 40% alcohol per volume. When I saw a doctor, I was prescribed a course of Librium (I forget the dosage, I think 25mg/capsule) one to two capsules every 4 to 6 hours with complete alcohol abstinence. I believe it was a course of either 24 or 28 capsules, and by the time the capsules had been finished I was free of alcohol. I suffered minimal effects resulting from withdrawal, and I had great fear in discontinuing use of alcohol. Previously upon abrupt cessation of alcohol intake, I had been hospitalized because of delirium and seizures, so I was very frightened to stop alcohol intake when I had a relapse of heavy usage again. That's when I was offered to try Librium (chlordiazepoxide) and none of that happened with Librium treatment. I was able to do so at home with assistance of family instead of at a hospital. It wasn't fun, but none of the horrifying/life-threatening withdrawal syndrome effects took hold, and the symptoms that did emerge were easily managed at home, likely even better than they could've been in the hospital. It's a magic medicine and I praise this brilliant gentleman Leo Sternbach for discovering it. I want more people to know the value of this medicine as I feel it is being underutilized by the medical community at this time. I hope that will change.
